What is a Cron Expression?
A cron expression is a string of five space-separated fields representing a time schedule in Unix-like operating systems. In standard POSIX and Vixie cron format, the fields define Minute (0–59), Hour (0–23), Day of Month (1–31), Month (1–12), and Day of Week (0–6). Operating system daemons evaluate these fields periodically to trigger automated background jobs without manual human intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do the 5 fields in a standard cron expression represent?+
Standard POSIX/Vixie cron expressions consist of five space-delimited fields in exact order: Minute (0–59), Hour (0–23), Day of Month (1–31), Month (1–12 or JAN–DEC), and Day of Week (0–6 or SUN–SAT, with 0 and 7 representing Sunday).
How do I run a cron job every 15 minutes?+
Use the step expression '*/15 * * * *'. The asterisk represents every hour, day, and month, while '*/15' in the first field triggers at minutes 0, 15, 30, and 45 of each hour.
How do I schedule a cron job for weekdays only?+
Set the fifth field (Day of Week) to '1-5'. For example, '0 9 * * 1-5' runs at 9:00 AM every Monday through Friday, skipping Saturday and Sunday.
What is the difference between '*' and '*/' in cron expressions?+
An asterisk ('*') specifies every valid value within that field's range (e.g. '*' in the minute field runs every minute). A step value ('*/n') restricts execution to increments of n from the start of the range (e.g. '*/10' runs every 10 minutes).
Does cron execute in UTC or local server time?+
Standard system cron daemon (crond) executes tasks in the server's local system timezone unless the CRON_TZ or TZ environment variable is explicitly set at the top of the crontab file.
